It’s becoming more and more common for the larger bike companies to apply the same engineering and design to their kids bike range as their adult range. Generally the technology stopped at the bottom end of the adult range rather than rolling into the kids range. But the Giant ARX kids mountain bike has bridged the gap. A new addition to the Giant bike range for the 2018/19 year, it’s already making a stir.

— GIANT ATX MOUNTAIN BIKE REVIEW —

Using a lightweight aluminium frame, it’s one of the lightest child’s bikes in it’s category. Designed using stable geometries and high quality components, it’s both durable and ready for adventure. It’s easy for a first or second bike to really help your youngster get up and going.

Future Proof:

The sturdy construction also keeps the bike future proof so that you can pass in from child to child should you have a few, or even on to the cousins. It’s ready for any amount of heavy handling and bashing you can throw at it, as you can see from the rear mechs built in protection. Giant haven’t sacrificed quality in order to achieve weight in the Giant ARX. It’s nice to see Giant moving away from disc brakes and suspension forks.

Most youth bikes are constructed with heavier frames and materials but the all-new ARX is lighter quicker and more fun for young riders. In fact, smaller riders can benefit even more from a lighter bike. With its ALUXX aluminium frame and fork ARX is the lightest bike in its category.

The frame features a lower bottom bracket for a lower centre of gravity and added stability. It comes in three different wheel size choices for different heights and has versatile tyres that can handle rough roads paths and even some dirt. You can even choose from a selection of 5 different colours should you not know exactly what your child wants.

The frame is fitted with lightweight components that are sized specifically for young riders including cranksets and cockpit components perfectly sized for various wheel options (16 20 or 24 inch).

You won’t have to worry about the gears the Giant ARX comes with either. A 32 tooth chainring matches up with a 12-32 cassette allowing them to explore all terrain. You won’t have the uphill strops (as often), though you may have to chase them down the odd hill. It’s easy enough to adjust the brake levers too, though it’s not likely you’ll have to. They have plenty of stopping power so you’ll know that your child is safe and secure as they race off into the distance.

Verdict:

Light weight, but high quality. This bike will make a great starting point for your youngster. Durable, stable and fun, at a reasonable price point it’s no surprise that these are one of the best selling youth bikes.
