Specialized Tactic II Helmet Review

Specialized’s Tactic II is aimed at trail riders on a budget still wanting a quality helmet. Whether you are riding to work or down your favourite trail this helmet is inspires confidence and saves you money. Specialized are often well known for catering for the whole market, and they haven’t let us down here.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Back in October, one of the CycleStore staff came off my bike dislocating their elbow snapping 3 ligaments in the process, whilst wearing this helmet. They managed to get up, pick up the bike and being walking to the nearest hospital. Thank fully the helmet survived as did they! With only a broken visor (they were able to replace) and a few marks, whilst it is fair to say it didn’t take the brute force of the impact, it certainly saved worse injuries.

The in-moulded construction has allowed Specialized to maximize the strength and keep the weight low for this helmet. Whilst it doesn’t offer the same level of protection or coverage as the Ambush, it still complies with the following safety standards for bicycle helmets: CPSC SNELL B90A CE and AS/NZS. It does have extended rear coverage for added protection in technical all mountain terrain.

The Tactic II is well vented with a 4th dimension cooling system and large vents optimizing cooling around the head. This makes it great for the commute to work or doing trails. With an SL Headset and 6 height positions, this helmet is easy to adjust the fit. And with a dial at the back, it is easy to do whilst on the fly. The TRI-Fix Web splitter allows for better comfort with the straps but leaves them only adjustable to length.

The full-size visor is in a fixed position so not great for riding in goggles, but the visor does come off with ease. This is great if you happen to damage it, and it needs replacing, or prefer riding in goggles.

BIKE TO WORK MYTHS BUSTED.

The only downside to this helmet is the fit, you certainly get better a fit with high-end helmets. And when going down particularly rough trials fast it isn’t as stable. Saying that the helmet doesn’t shift or lose any adjustments made.

This is a helmet for trail riders, but it is meant for those on a budget there are certainly better trail helmets out there.  The Tactic II will keep your head cool and in one shape following a crash but without a MIPS or the coverage, other helmets offer better protection. This is a great value helmet that looks good and feels comfy for your commute to work or hitting the trails on the way home.
