A long awaited arrival from the Specialized brand, the Women`s Turbo Levo. The Turbo Levo has been one of the best selling bikes of the past year, so we were super excited to try this.

— IS MTB RACING MAKING AN ELECTRIC SHIFT? —

Specialized claim that whilst you’re out on the all new Turbo Levo Comp Carbon FSR, theres no denying that you’re on a fully-fledged trail bike. They claim that you won’t even notice the bike is electric!

If speed is at the top of your wish list, theres no better tool than the Women’s Turbo Levo Hardtail 29. It takes the fast, fun, and efficient characteristics of the other Specialized 29er hardtails and adds exclusive pedal assist technology to crank up those numbers on the radar gun.

The Need To Know:

First and foremost, it has all of the speed and nimble handling that the rest of the Specialized hardtail trail bikes are known for. An easy fit, ultra-short chainstays for nimble handling, and a low bottom bracket that makes the bike feel glued to the trail. In other words, it rides like an awesome mountain bike. Which we’re happy to hear because what would be the point, otherwise?

Then comes the efficient and powerful Specialized e-Bike technology, along with an integrated battery and motor. It’s the same motor as last year, except the software has been revamped to increase efficiency. As well as this the Women’s Turbo Levo features an M5 Premium aluminium frame.

Specialized’s Rx trail-tuned motor delivers the power quietly and smoothly, allowing you to unlock any terrain you wish. Similarly to the men’s version of the bike, you can choose from a range of power outputs to conserve energy. Lastly the custom Specialized 1.2E motor features instant pedal engagement. This will mean that you get immediate power the moment you need it. The torque is consistent throughout the entire cadence range without any jumpy power delivery.

At the battery, you’ll find that its fully integrated with the down tube and easily removable for quick charging or swaps. It has a lengthy lifespan for hitting long, out of the way trails and, along with the motor, is strategically placed for optimal weight distribution.

Controlling the bike has never been easier the the new Specialized integrated Trail Display. You’ll know how long the battery has left and which pedal assist mode you’re in. The connectivity is great through Bluetooth or ANT+ to the Specialized Mission Control App. The Women’s Turbo Levo also features a power meter that shows exactly how much power you’re putting out vs. the motor. A nice little extra for all the die hard riders that want to make sure they’re still pulling their weight.

The Bike:

This version has a durable build kit, with a size-specific SR Suntour XCM32 fork, Shimano hydraulic disc brakes, and a one-by Shimano group set to handle shift and drive train duties. There’s also an explicit focus placed on making this bike purpose-built for female riders, so you’ll find that every touch point of the bike has been specifically designed for women.

— ELECTRIC BIKES TIMELINE: PAST, PRESENT AND FUTURE —

The new Specialized Turbo Levo certainly feels lighter than most e-bikes we’ve tried before. It feels less like you’re hauling a motorbike round, and more like a slightly heavier mtb. This is a great progression from previous editions where the bikes were definitely on the heavy side. Specialized have attempted to give a grippier, more accute feeling out of the wheels through a better connection to the trail.

Power through the pedals certainly isn’t an issue on the bike – the motor is definitely on the punchy side. In the more powerful modes there’s a slight under steer from the front wheel – meaning you may have to drop the handlebars slightly to get more weight over the front. This can also be the case on the climbs when the motor can cause you to almost pull a wheelie up the climb.

The Verdict:

If you’re looking to make the move to electric to ride further, faster and longer. With the performance of a top end mountain bike – the Specialized Women’s Turbo Levo could be for you. Specialized have left no stone unturned in the design and engineering of this bike, and that really shows. With the improved battery and motor – it’s almost a no brainer!
